"What is the difference between HDMI and 3G/HD-SDI?"
In our recent feature on PureMedia™ and EDID management, we discussed the challenges of ensuring proper EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) communication between the source and display in order to establish a successful connection. During this communication, the video source sends HDCP data to the display. HDCP, or High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection, provides a security protocol in HDMI that forces the source device to generate a security key in order for the TV to display content. This protection also requires a handshake between the source device and the display device, which slows down the connection from input to output.
Developed with the objective of transmitting both audio and video within a single cable, the consumer market has adopted HDMI as its HD interface standard. However, the professional broadcasting industry prefers the quality, durability, speed, time code, and flexibility of 3G/HD-SDI.
SDI (Standard Digital Interface) transmits uncompressed, unencrypted digital video over a standard coaxial cable. Created by the broadcasting industry, HD-SDI transmits HD video with greater fidelity and resolution than provided by standard HD. In addition, its lack of HDCP encryption results in faster and smoother video switching.
Broadcast Video Solutions & HDCP Compliance
Pro-A/V equipment commonly integrated in broadcast video systems that require HDCP compliance includes matrix switchers, scalers, and splitters. While these devices do not provide authentication for key exchange, with any video processing present they must transmit HDCP. Due to varying video formats at the source and output - for example, HDMI source input and 3G/HD-SDI display output - improper communication may result in loss of interoperability, resulting in a snowy image or an error message on the display. Firmware updates sometimes solve these issues.
